Remove audio from a video, free

Drop in an MP4, MOV or WebM and get the same video back with no sound. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and the picture isn’t re-encoded.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you add is uploaded.

How to remove audio from a video

  1. Pick a video. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV all work. The file stays on your computer: the page reads it in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
  2. Press Remove audio. Every sound track is dropped. The picture is copied as it is, without re-encoding, so quality doesn’t change and it finishes quickly, even for long recordings.
  3. Save the file. It downloads in the same format you started with, named yourfile-no-audio. If you miss the download, press Download again.

Muting vs. removing the audio track

There are two ways to make a video silent, and they aren’t the same:

Removed track (this tool)Muted track (volume at zero)
File sizeSmaller: the audio data is goneAbout the same
Video qualityUnchanged, copied as it isOften re-encoded by the editor
Players show a volume controlUsually notYes
Can the sound be recoveredNo, keep your originalDepends on the editor

A removed track is what you want for screen recordings with background noise, clips you’ll put new music or voice-over on, product demos that autoplay on a web page, and anything shared where the original sound shouldn’t be heard.

When it might not work

Other ways to strip the sound

ffmpeg does the same thing from Terminal: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy -an output.mp4. -an drops the audio and -c copy keeps the video as it is.

QuickTime Player on a Mac can’t delete a track, but iMovie can: detach the audio, delete it and export (which re-encodes). On Windows, the Photos app’s video editor has a volume control that mutes the clip on export.

FAQ

How do I remove audio from a video online for free?

Choose the video above and press Remove audio. The page drops the sound track and downloads the silent video in the same format. There’s no sign-up, no watermark and no length limit.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and rewritten by your browser on your own computer. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it works for private recordings too.

Does removing the audio lower the video quality?

No. The video stream is copied as it is, without re-encoding, so every frame stays exactly the same. Only the audio track is left out, which also makes the file a little smaller.

Can I mute just part of a video?

Not with this tool: it removes the sound from the whole video. To silence one section, use a video editor and lower the volume over that range, or cut the section out.
