Resize an image to a YouTube thumbnail, 1280×720

Drop in a photo, screenshot or video frame. Crop it to 16:9 or fit it over a blurred background, then download a JPG that meets YouTube’s 2 MB limit. Nothing is uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you add is uploaded.

How to resize an image to 1280×720 for a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Pick an image. A frame from your video, a photo or a design exported from Figma or Canva. It stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  2. Choose how it fits. Crop to fill scales the image until it covers the whole 16:9 frame and trims what sticks out. Fit whole image keeps everything and fills the empty sides with a blurred copy of the picture (or plain black bars).
  3. Drag to frame it. Drag the preview to move the image, and use Zoom to crop in tighter. Arrow keys nudge it once the preview has focus.
  4. Download. You get a 1280×720 JPG. If the file would be over 2 MB, the quality is lowered step by step until it fits.

YouTube’s thumbnail requirements

SpecRequirement
Resolution1280×720 recommended
Minimum width640 pixels
Aspect ratio16:9
File typeJPG, PNG or GIF (not animated)
File sizeUnder 2 MB

A 1280×720 JPG at good quality is usually a few hundred kilobytes, well inside the limit. PNG screenshots with lots of detail are where people hit the 2 MB cap, which is why this tool always exports JPG.

Crop or letterbox?

Check it at the size people see it

On the home feed a thumbnail is shown at roughly 320 to 360 pixels wide, and in the “Up next” sidebar at about 168. The previews under the tool show both. Small text that reads fine at full size often disappears at 168 pixels, and the timestamp covers the bottom-right corner, so keep faces and words away from there.

FAQ

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

1280×720 pixels (16:9), with a minimum width of 640 pixels. YouTube accepts JPG, PNG and GIF files under 2 MB.

How do I make my thumbnail under 2 MB?

Export it as a JPG at 1280×720. This tool does that and, if the file would still be over 2 MB, lowers the JPG quality step by step until it fits. Most thumbnails end up at a few hundred kilobytes.

How do I fit a vertical or square image in a YouTube thumbnail without cropping it?

Choose “Fit whole image, blurred background”. The whole picture stays in the middle and the empty sides are filled with a blurred, darkened copy of it, so there are no black bars.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is opened, resized and turned into a JPG by your browser on your own computer. Nothing is sent to a server.
